The home of Janet Corke’s memoirs

“There is a friendly roof I know…a home where heart and soul may rest”

Anne Brontë, ‘The Consolation’

Janet Corke is a Welsh solicitor who gave up practising in 2014 after fifty two years ‘in the trade’ and now lives in Liverpool.

She writes about her life and adventures when she married Charlie, a rather unconventional civil engineer with a passion for rescuing old buildings.

In 1963, before they had completed the restoration of a historic mountain cottage in North Wales, Charlie Corke’s work as a civil engineer whisked the family off to an island in the sun – Melita, the Land of Honey.

In this second memoir, Janet charts her time in Malta in the early 1960s, providing a charming and unique insight into a truly fascinating period of Maltese history, on the island Churchill once dubbed ‘an unsinkable aircraft carrier’.

“An easy-to-read memoir written in an engaging style by someone with a gift for dialogue and acute observation”

Elizabeth Cruickshank, Legal Women Feb 2022

A Hidden Home in the Gwydyr Forest

Janet’s first memoir is about Ty’n yr Ardd, the birthplace of the celebrated Welsh poet Trebor Mai, which was empty and appeared abandoned when Charlie Corke discovered it in 1955.

A thousand feet above the Conwy Valley in North Wales, it was accessible only on foot with a nearby stream its only asset, but after six years of struggle the cottage became a comfortable home for his family.

This first memoir was published in 2019 and is currently out of print, though still available on Kindle. A 2nd print edition is coming soon, so please complete the “Register my interest” form below to be the first to know!
